e-Book Page Size

I am currently in the process of creating the “Learn to Animate” digital book I funded through Kickstarter.

The struggle is knowing the correct size for an e-book page.

According to Chris Robley in his article “eBook Formatting: What Page Size Should I Use?“, it doesn’t matter the size.

If text flows then there can be no fixed layout; if there’s no fixed layout then your manuscript file’s page size really doesn’t matter. After the ePUB conversion process, the text that was gently scooped up from your manuscript file will be displayed (in the correct order, of course!) according to user settings and preferences.  -Chris Robley

I was excited about this at first but later realized my book is not text based. It is mostly images & graphics with some text. I need to be in control of the formatting to ensure everything looks right to the reader.

Realizing there could be a lot of issues with my book, I asked someone I knew had written an image-driven book.

I got in touch with Kristian Sather the author & artist of Cartoon Design Revealed.

Here is his response:

Personally, I am creating the pages at 8.5 x 11 inches at 350 dpi (2975 x 3850 pixels). It is always better to be too big than not small.

While designing pages, I make sure to leave space in case I need to crop the digital book to a smaller size or if I decide to print the book.

I hope this helps.
